literary humour

Kathy writes a quote for my novel Haunted Houses. I receive a phone call from a copy editor and fact checker at Simon & Schuster (my imprint’s “parent”) who says, adamantly, “Kathy Acker is not the author of Don Quixote.” I respond, with assurance, “Yes she is and so is Cervantes.” There’s a long pause. The woman asks, “Well, what else has she written?” “Great Expectations,” I say.

— Lynne Tillman, quoted in the introduction of Samuel R. Delany, 1984: Selected Letters
